Gone to Glacier

Posted by on June 8, 2011

After having a great time in Waterton, Jason and I made our way to Glacier National Park in Montana. We crossed over the border with no issues except for the confiscation of our citrus. I guess when life gives you lemons, US customs takes them away! Oh well. 🙁

We didn’t get to far on Monday, just to St. Mary’s on the east side of Glacier. Just basic campground spots. I’m sure the view from our spot would have been amazing but we were in rain showers and low cloud cover all day. After a fantastic fish supper, minus the lemon, we were off to bed. No campfire due to the poor weather and cost of firewood.

This morning we did the 13 miles on the east side of the Going-to-the-Sun road that was open. This is a small vehicle only road, under 24 feet. No large campers or RVs allowed, so of course we just took the truck. Again the weather was not going to cooperate with us so we didn’t get much of a view. There were some neat waterfalls and the aftermath of a few avalanches from this year, so still worth the drive.

After we picked our trailer up from the campsite and “made hast while the sun ain’t shining”. 🙂 Unfortunately our travels into Browning were slow going. It’s hard to believe that this road is the alternate route for large campers and RVs, as the Going-to-the-Sun road is not an option. It proved to be a curvy mess that took lots of time in the rain. Soon we were on the number 2 highway, which was much better. The highway is made from that purple-red rock so it looks so cool! Even this massive river over-flowing it’s banks beside the road has a purplish-pink tinge to it. We missed out on all the mountain views along the way – still, we were really enjoying ourselves. We had originally planned on powering though to Coeur d’Alene, but we couldn’t miss this. The trees on this side of Glacier are very tall and the forest is green and lush. A huge difference from the east side where the trees were stubby bushes, I suppose due to the high elevation.

We got a fantastic camp spot at West Glacier. They have great spots and since it is Tuesday night, we are basically the only ones here! Perfect! Lots of trees and lush vegetation, with a side of mule deer every once and a while. We are enjoying our $15.00 store bought campfire. Oh Parks Canada, thank you for the free firewood. I will never take you for granted again!!!

On a side note this will be our first glimpse of GSM cellular coverage since entering the US. I can see why people complain of crummy AT&T coverage. Jason’s phone is off because Rogers has terrible roaming rates… Email if you need us. (or comment!)
