Transmission Fun

Posted by on March 26, 2007

Every 100,000 Miles or so one should change the transmission fluid and filter in an automobiles transmission. Well, this last Saturday was the day for Blackie 2.0

Not only did it get 12 liters of Mercon 5 – a synthetic blended fluid and a new filter, But I thought now would be a good time to pull out the Valve body separator plate and enlarge some of the holes that govern the rate at which the shift accumulator pistons are filled and thus increasing the speed that the transmission shifts the gear. (longest sentence ever) Basically a “shift kit”

Big Props go out to Tim for keeping me from drowning in ATF and passing me the tools, a big time saver. And to Darren for letting me use his mill and Indexed drills. And best of all I got a Man Size creeper for my (early) birthday present from momzee and papa-J.

I the whole point of the transmission modification is to make the shifts happen faster and harder. (and stronger?) A secondary benefit is that the transmissions clutch plates will last a lot longer now.

All went to plan, and my shifts are nice and crisp.

It was a good project, even though it was a little on the messy side and the garage looked like a murder scene with the ATF all over the place. Anyway, good times, good times. Next time you’re tearing something apart, I’m down with that.
