Our stay in Coeur d’Alene

Posted by on June 9, 2011

After a great, rainy, time in Glacier we left for a sunnier location. The forecast for Coeur d’Alene promsied sun, so off we went. Normally a 350km trek doesn’t sound too bad, but it was slow going due to narrow, winding roads with no shoulders. We were constantly climbing and descending steep grades, not an such an easy task with the trailer behind us. Fourtnately it was smooth sailing once we were on the interstate except for a few bumpy stretches.

We got a great camping spot on the east side of Coeur d’Alene. We stayed at Beauty Creek Campground which is located in the Idaho Panhandle National Forest. Not too many spots, 14 in total. The nice campground host set us up with a great spot; a fire pits _and_ a raised fire box grill, a covered picnic table area, and river front property!

After we had some time to relax we drove into town. Coeur d’Alene Lake is a massive lake, 100 miles of shoreline. Very scenic, and I really don’t think that there is a bad location around the lake. The million dollar lake houses dot practically every usable space around the lake. For good reason, as this area is beautiful. We walked up and down the main street. There are lots of neat shops and restaurants. We needed some groceries, so we stopped at Peterson Family Food. With a name like that, we thought it would have to be good! We had very little success as we couldn’t even find bread! Seriously?

When we got back to our campsite, we had some new neighbors. A group doing a road trip from California to Banff. Comical that it is our trip, done in reverse!

Today we did the scenic highway around the lake. It was extremely curvy and one of us got car sick. Any guesses?? Yes, it was Kara. No surprise there. Good road for speed bikes, not for Kara. Sorry Darren, but it was very scenic so worth the nausea. We stopped at Harrison at a Creamery for ice cream. Huge servings! May not want to see ice cream for another month. Maybe…

After our scenic highway trip, that took about 3 hours, headed to the west side of Coeur d’Alene. Our campground host informed us that there were much better stores there. So off we went. But that is a much longer story that I will let Jason tell in another post.

Sorry to hear that you got sick Kara, but your right, it’s a beautiful ride, especially on a bike, I’ll bet you wished you had your little 250cc with you.
