Our fall in a nutshell & the Cabin

Posted by on November 21, 2010

This fall was spent getting out most weekends, even if just to pike lake. We hosted supper out there a few times for friends who want to remain nameless. (Tim & Crystal and Kyle & Joanne). We went home for thanksgiving and to the Steak Night in Davidson.

This weekend we are at our (I wish) cabin near Tobin Lake. It is cabin #3 (of 3) at Torch Valley Country Retreats. A quaint little 1.5 level, full scribe log cabin nearly as far north as one would want to go. Far enough that you don’t have cell coverage of any kind, but not so far that you can’t make it up for the weekend.

Here we sit by the wood fire and watch the snow fall, the birds feed and the deer being deer-like. There is a bird feeder right out our front windows so there is constant traffic of Blue Jays, Grey Jays, Black-Capped Chickadees, Pine Grosbeaks, Evening Grosbeaks, Downy Woodpeckers as well as the occasional Magpie and White-breasted Nuthatch. There is usually a squirrel nearby to shake thing up a bit. We had some fun rigging up the iPhone to get some up-close video of the birds and the squirrels.

On Saturday morning we got a bale of alfalfa to bait the deer, we waited all evening but nothing came. Then Sunday morning when we least expected it, they sauntered up and started eating. Kara was pleased.

Please enjoy the attached photos and the video I have titled “Had to work all day, but now I’m at the cabin watching birds.”

Looks awesome and the video was great. Impressed that you did all of that on your phone! New phone number for me tomorrow, will text you when I get it.

Looks like you had a blast and I was so concerned about you going out into the wilderness on such a cold week-end.
Looks like the squirrel knows largest to smallest when it comes to the bread!
Good video. Didn’t know you could type so fast.

The squirrel actually took the full slices first, then later I tore them up to slow him down. The time laps video is fun to do sometimes, it’s not always evident that is is fast forward until you watch it for a while.
